Metformin is usually the first drug given when Type 2 diabetes is first diagnosed. It is easier and less painful to take than insulin and has less chance of causing blood levels to drop too far. Insulin is usually reserved for later in the course of the condition if the diabetic's own pancreas is not able to produce enough insulin.
Early Insulin Treatment: According to a study reported on in the journal Endocrinology Research in January 2013, beginning treatment with insulin early in the course of the disease could be a better approach.
Investigators at the Catholic University of Korea in Bucheon, Korea, studied 38 people with new cases of Type 2 diabetes. They were treated for 12 weeks with insulin. At the end of the study:
  • their HbA1c percentage and blood sugar levels decreased, while
  • the pancreas of many diabetics improved in their ability to make insulin.
  • the amount of belly fat also decreased while fat under the skin increased.
From this information it was concluded treating with insulin at the onset of Type 2 diabetes was associated with:
  • better blood sugar control,
  • improvement in the diabetic's ability to make insulin, and
  • improvement in body fat distribution.
Shifting fat from the abdominal area to areas under the skin is considered an improvement. Why? Because belly fat releases hormones that tend to raise your blood sugar levels.
Belly Fat: Another study, reported on in 2012 in the journal Diabetes Obesity and Metabolism, showed increasing insulin levels in Type 2 diabetics resulted in slight decreases in belly fat. Adding pioglitazone to the treatment resulted in more of a decrease, although both decreases were modest. When pioglitazone was added, liver fat went down and weight in non-fat tissue increased. This led to members of the Veterans' Administration Healthcare System in San Diego, United States, concluding the change in fat distribution could account for the beneficial effects of pioglitazone.
Aerobic Exercise: While research on belly fat and medications continues, a natural way to get rid of fat in the abdominal area is by aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise is the kind of physical activity that makes your breathing and heart beat faster. Besides getting rid of belly fat, it provides great exercise for your heart:
  • it helps your brain to produce endorphins, which helps your mood.
  • it helps build up bones also, so you are then less likely to break a hip if you fall.
Walking briskly for about 10 hours will burn a pound of fat. Why not schedule some quality time for walking a half hour a day? In three weeks you could get rid of a pound (0.5 kg) of belly fat, feel better, and lower your risk of bone fracture.
Type 2 diabetes is no longer a condition you must just live with. It need not slowly and inevitably get worse. Now is the time to take control of the disease... take back your health and your life.
